Firewall Settings

Configuring third party firewalls is not covered in this guide. For configuration settings to allow incoming connections to port 22 (the default SSH port) for your firewall check the Port Forward website.

If you have problems connecting to the SSH Server over the Local Area Network (LAN) it may well be due to incorrect firewall settings. Consider temporarily disabling your firewall - as this could leave your PC open to security threats it is advised that you temporarily remove it from an external network (e.g. the internet). As soon as the setup is working, your firewall can be enabled and configured.

Remember that you may also need to configure your router to port forward to the Server's IP when connecting via an external network (see here).

Configure Windows XP Firewall


To configure the Windows 7 firewall to allow incoming connections to port 22 (default SSH port) -

  1. Goto Start > Control Panel and select Windows Firewall (Note - you may need to Switch to Classic View).
  2. Click on the Exceptions tab and then click on Add Port... -

  3. Add a name for the rule in the Name: box (e.g. ssh) and enter 22 in the Port number: box, ensure TCP is selected, then click on the OK button -

  4. The new rule should have been added to Exceptions list, click on OK -

Configure Windows 7 Firewall


To configure the Windows 7 firewall to allow incoming connections to port 22 (default SSH port) -

  1. Goto Start > Control Panel and select Windows Firewall (Note - the view may need to be changed to either Large icons or Small icons).
  2. Select Advanced settings -

  3. Select Inbound Rules in the left pane and then click on New rule... in right pane -

  4. The New Inbound Rule Wizard should now be displayed. Select Rule Type as Port then click on the Next button.
  5. In the Protocols and Ports section select TCP and enter 22 in the Specific local ports: box, then click on the Next button.
  6. In the Action section ensure Allow the connection is enabled then click on the Next button.
  7. Select whichever option applies to your own setup in the Profile section (or select all), then click on the Next button.
  8. Enter a name in the relevant box then click on the Finish button.
